composers' competition call

Starting from Crete!

An important initiative for Greek music composition starts in Crete!

The Region of Crete, the Greek Composers Union and the Heraklion Piano Festival collaborate for the implementation of a composition competition of works for two pianos.

The Composition Competition “Theodor Antoniou 2022-2023”, dedicated to the late composer, aims to give the opportunity to Greek composers of Greek and Cypriot origin from all over the world who were born from 1/1/1983 onwards to compose works for two pianos, promoting contemporary music creation and enriching the already important repertoire for this special combination.

At the same time, it seeks to highlight and establish Crete as a meeting point for Greek composers.

Three cities will host the performance of the winning works. Heraklion will pass the baton to Athens, with the support of the Greek National Opera, and then the concert will travel to London, at the Hellenic Center.

The members of the jury, significant figures with international recognition in the world of contemporary music, are Giorgos Koumentakis (Composer, Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera), Joseph Papadatos (Composer, President of the Greek Composers’ Union, University Professor), Minas Borboudakis (Composer), Erato Alakiozidou (Pianist) and Spyros Deligiannopoulos (Composer, Pianist).

The jury will select 6 compositions that will go through to the final round. These works will be performed live in a public concert in Heraklion in the presence of the jury who will award three prizes, accompanied by cash awards of 1500, 1000 and 500 euros respectively.

Commendations will be awarded to the 3 remaining works, as well as an audience prize.

The works will be performed by the internationally acclaimed and award-winning piano duo “Antithesis”, consisting of Petros Moschos and Dimitris Karydis.
